Barley & Board

Denton may be well known for being filled with artists and hipsters, but if you've never been, this northwest town also has a killer food scene, at least since Barley & Board opened up late last year.

Mother Board
Located at the corner of Denton Square, lies a rustic styled restaurant called Barley & Board. This spacious restaurant, which we learned was previously three separate establishments, encompasses all the culture Denton has to offer.

After one of us visited a few weeks ago, she was adamant about getting it on the blog to share with y'all. So last weekend, we finally got a chance to swing by, and I finally got to see what all the buzz was about!

Let me tell you now. Everything about Barley & Board - from the local artisan tables, to the original exposed brick dated back to the early 1900s - will make you fall in love. There's an authenticity to the ambiance and food that immerses you into the culture that this local restaurant emanates.

Bacon Wrapped Medjool Dates
Based on our visit there, you can't really go wrong with anything on the menu. Executive Chef Chad Kelley, former chef of Meddlesome Moth, describes the cuisine as "Eclectic-American", which involves a little bit of everything with a twist here and there that will undoubtedly excite your taste buds.

Slow Roasted Pork Tenderloin
Being the indecisive people that we are, we ordered the top choices as recommended by our server. Everything, as captioned under each dish, is highly recommended and are some of their bestsellers.

We definitely recommend trying the Mother Board for the freshly made jam! They make a new batch using a different type of beer and fruit once they run out. We got to try their apple, apricot, and IPA jam, and it was incredible! Mostly everything is made in house such as their candied fruits and pickles. They've even started brewing their own beers again! The date is unset for when they will begin serving, but it's exciting to know their house-made beer will be ready soon!

Brazen Two-Faced Quail
A few final thoughts:

1. The space is enormous and perfect for large parties.

2. The chef will accommodate for any food allergies/intolerances.

3. Remember Jason Lee from the Incredibles and My Name Is Earl? Well he's a part owner of this establishment! How neat!

It is about an hour outside of Dallas, so we recommend making a day trip out of it and exploring Denton while you're in the area. There are antique shops, boutiques, coffee shops, book stores, and much more just within Denton Square. It's a drive, but it's 100% worth it to go at least once.
